About St Albans City and District Council

Here at St Albans, our approach is positive and entrepreneurial. We take great pride in our place and supporting the people that make up our thriving community. We know our residents, visitors and businesses share this pride. That’s why we want to make sure our vibrant city, towns and villages continue to be a great place to live, work and visit.

About our City and District

St Albans District is one of the most beautiful areas in the country, with an ancient, historical Cathedral city, charming towns and villages, open countryside nearby, and great transport links. In short, it is a superb place to live and work. Some of our most popular attractions include the Cathedral, Roman remains, medieval city, Heartwood Forest, award winning museums, and ancient charter market. And we have significant economic strengths based on green technology, independent retail, visitor economy and our professional services sector.

The Council

As an award-winning council serving around 147,000 people and one of the biggest employers in our district we work hard to be at the forefront of new thinking locally, regionally and nationally.

We are transforming how we work so that we are fit to face our future challenges. This means being able to adapt quickly and respond flexibly to our clients. We will achieve this by making the most of the latest digital technology, developing our workforce so that we have the right skills in place and harnessing the capacity of our partners.

We are rapidly evolving and ready to embrace new ideas. That’s why we encourage our people to find innovative ways of doing things.  Working here means being positive about change and working flexibly. Our values and behaviours support this and make us unique.

We are a lean operation of around 450 staff, but we trust each other to care, be confident and work together to achieve the best for our customers. Join our team, make a difference and let St Albans work for you!

This is a place where you’ll get to challenge the status quo and we’ll encourage you to be passionate about coming up with innovate ideas to better serve our community. We put customer needs at the centre of designing effective solutions and have the confidence to try out new ideas. We encourage our employees work flexibly and able to build the perfect work-life balance, so we operate a hybrid working model which has various flexible working options.

Working together is the St Albans way and we want to encourage a culture that puts residents and other customers at the heart of what we do.  We expect our staff to trust each other to care and be confident.

There comes a time in the history of an organisation when an opportunity emerges to take great leaps forward towards a sustainable future.  That time is now.

We want to make a step change towards becoming more adaptable as an organisation; better able to respond to financial pressures, shifting expectations and pace of change, and constantly learning and innovating.  Our new operating model has been designed with all these things in mind.

Our digital transformation has already accelerated beyond anything we could have anticipated eighteen months ago, and our drive to create an increasingly modern and efficient council is firmly underway.

The Council’s focus, is on four particular areas; Combatting the climate emergency, the need to for more social housing, a sustainable business environment, and supporting our communities. Key to these things is the development of our Local Plan. You can read more about the Council’s objectives in our Corporate Plan.

We are looking for curious, courageous, inspired and talented leaders – those who enjoy challenge, can lead with energy, vision and people skills, and who can thrive within a complex and uncertain environment.
